On Saturday, (4th August 2012) Toronto witnessed the inaugural edition of the Punjabi International Film Academy Awards (PIFAA). The crème de la crème of the Punjabi film industry arrived from India at Radisson Hotel, Mississauga promising the South Asian community a weekend full of Punjabi Films, music and culture.
About 50 visiting Punjabi film personalities included leading names like Dharmendra, Om Puri, Sonu Sood, Divya Dutta, Jimmy Shergill, Neeru Bajwa, Surveen Chawla, Jonita Doda, Binu Dhillon, Daljit Dosanjh, Gippy Grewal, Rama Vij, Kamal Khan, Jaidev Kumar, Navniat Singh, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Arya Babbar, Kapil Sharma, Mandeep Kumar and Trilok Malik. This was only the beginning of the grand weekend.
A crowd of 6000 was at the Air Canada Centre to witness the first Punjabi International Film Academy Awards. Federal Minister Tim Uppal shared the message from the Prime Minister Stephen Harper while Hon. Harinder Takhar, the Ontario Minister shared congratulatory messages from the McGuinty government.
The Awards function at the Air Canada Centre was a dazzling evening of glamour, glitz and electrifying performances. The spectacular show impressed everyone while the superb hosting by Kapil Sharma and Gurpreet Ghuggi kept the audience glued to their seats. The evening was full of power packed performances from leading names- Neeru Bajwa, Surveen Chawala, Jonita Doda, Divya Dutta, Daljit Dosanj, Amrinder Singh, Gippy Grewal and Jimmy Shergill. A grand set design, fireworks and energetic dances by Shiamak Dawar’s troupe gave the show an electrifying touch.
Mr Rajinder Saini, President of the Parvasi Entertainment shared his dream of a high quality awards function like Bollywood awards functions and Punjabi cinema and thanked everyone for the support while Mr Harpreet Sethi of Black Diamond Entertainments, the presenting partner expressed his happiness to be associated with such a wonderful initiative.
A total of 19 awards were given including Life Time Achievement Award for Punjabi film legend Dara Singh and Public Choice Award for Best Film. Jine Mera Dil Luteya was a big winner bagging 6 awards including Best film (Public choice) and best director(Mandeep Singh), Best actor (Daljit Dosanjh/Gippy Grewal) and Best actress(Neeru Bajwa),best Screenplay / best dialogue (Dheeraj Rattan) and Best cinematography(Harish Joshi).
Yaar Annmulle bagged 4 awards that included Best Music Director(Gurmeet Singh), Best actor in a negative role( Kartar Cheema), Best performance in a Comic role (Gurpreet Ghuggi) and best Lyricist(Kumaar). Dharti bagged 3 awards –Best Film (Jury), Best supporting actor - male(Rahul Dev) and Best editor (Manish More). Other award winners included Rama Vij (Best supporting role , female in Khushiyan), Sumitra Iyer(Best Playback singer, Female in Yara O Dildara), Rajan Gangadhar and Trilok Malik (best story for Khushiyan).
The Canadian born beauty Neeru Bajwa who bagged the best Actress award was emotional as she received her first PIFAA trophy and gave a heart warming speech. The best Actor Award was a tie between Superstars of Punjab cinema Daljit Dosanjh and Gippy Grewal.
The Opening Act included a special song, an ode to the Province of Ontario, exclusively written and produced for PIFAA. With the mesmerizing choreography of Toronto’s very own Divvya Kumar, the performances impressed the audience and many simply wished that the show wouldn’t come to an end. Divya Dutta paid a special tribute to the Brand ambassador Dharmendra dancing to some of his famous songs.
The stars of the show were undoubtedly the Co-hosts Sonu sood and Kapil Sharma during the first half and Divya Dutta and Gurpreet Ghuggi in the second half. They added to the zing of the Punjabi Tadka to the show and kept the audience roaring with laughter with their brand of spontaneous humor.
With the relentless efforts and support of the entire Punjabi film industry, PIFAA 2012 was a roaring success and changed the image of the Punjabi film industry for ever !
Earlier a press conference was organized for the inauguration on Friday 3rd August at the hotel. It was attended by more than 100 media persons many of them from India, Vancouver and United States. The media was clearly excited by the presence of large number of Punjabi Film Stars and eagerly awaited the programs to unfold.
Hon Charles Souza, Ontario Minister for Citizenship and Immigration thanked the stars for visiting Ontario and hoped that PIFAA awards will be highly successful. Dharmendra unveiled the beautiful PIFAA Trophy and all the stars took pictures with the trophy. Score of volunteers and star struck fans added to the carnival like atmosphere. The PIFAA weekend consisted of several programs.
A special screening of new film Carry on Jatta at Albion cinema was attended by the star cast – Gippy Grewal, Binu Dhillon, Gurpreet Ghuggi etc and a large number of fans gathered there to see their favorite stars. At Tandoori flame where the stars went for dinner hundreds of people had gathered to get a glimpse of their favorite stars.
The Play Teri Amrita at Rose theatre Brampton proved why Om Puri is such a highly rated actor. The tragic story of two people in love and their anguish was so dramatically played out by Om Puri and Divya Dutta that audience was literally crying in the auditorium in the end.
The trade show – Shining Punjab at International centre had several stalls including real estate, jewellary, interior design and was attended by a large number of people.
The PIFAA week end provided a glimpse of Punjabi films, music, dance and food that will be remembered for a long time and seems to have changed the way people’s views about Punjabi Films.
The PIFA Awards will be can be seen soon on TV worldwide. Leading TV networks Zee Cinema (Global TV Partner), ATN (Canada TV Partner) and PTC(India TV Partner) will be telecasting it in about 3 weeks.
